Midwifery

NHS Grampian welcomes newly recruited midwives, both newly qualified and experienced staff.  Newly recruited maternity staff are fully supported through the induction process by Team Leaders, Managers and Practice Education staff.  In Grampian, we offer orientation days and Midwives are also provided with named Supervisors in their ward/area and a Flying Start mentor if appropriate, in addition to their Supervisor of Midwives.  All staff are given a Skills Passport directing them to mandatory and additional study which is specific to hospital or integrated community working.  Skills Passports make it easier to map progress and identify training requirements, it also serves to highlight when updates are due.  In order to offer equitable opportunities throughout NHS Grampian, maternity services has an education and training plan which details our mandatory eLearning education currently provided within NHS Grampian, training and educational opportunities that Midwives and Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) will be supported to access by NHS Grampian (PPDU and External Opportunities) as well as priority training and education needs for each sector within NHS Grampian Maternity Services allowing staff to develop a personal progression plan.

Staff are developed further with the implementation of rotational working within the hospital setting and integrated working in Community Midwifery which allows staff to develop a breadth of knowledge, update skills and develop versatility in their career.  We also offer exciting secondment and project roles which are widely advertised across Maternity Services.  We are also supporting the  learning and development of Return to Practice Midwives across Grampian.  Work is underway to prepare for our move to the new Baird Hospital in Aberdeen, the upgrade of Peterhead Maternity Hospital and a new Community Maternity Unit and Hub in Inverurie.  There has never been a better time to join all the good work taking place in Maternity Services in Grampian!
