Return to Practice

Has your NMC Registration lapsed?  Do you wish to return to Adult, Mental Health, Children’s Nursing or Midwifery after a career break?  Do you need to build your confidence and experience before re-registering with the NMC?

NHS Grampian and Robert Gordon University are working jointly to welcome Adult, Mental Health, Children’s Nurses and Midwives whose registration has lapsed to return to practice by providing a short, fully funded course, to prepare for re-joining the NMC register and enable nurses and midwives to return to their field of practice in a safe and confident manner.

For Adult, Mental Health and Children’s Nurses this is a unique opportunity where individuals can undertake this course which will be delivered by 6 mandatory face-to-face study days, that will be utilised to prepare for university life and the academic skills needed plus, a reminder of some clinical skills required to practice safely.  Theory is mostly provided in an online format and staff are fully supported to access materials.  Clinical placement will also be arranged in a relevant area of the field of practice.

The course can be completed via a full or part-time route and hours are negotiated depending on length of lapse of registration.  Normally in a lapse of registration of up to 12 years there is a requirement to undertake 300 practice hours over an 8 week period.  A lapse of registration over 12 years will be 450 hours of practice.  The course runs over 15 weeks, if studies full-time and full support is offered in university and practice areas.

For Midwifery the course utilises a blended learning approach using online distance learning materials and forums followed by a period of clinical practice lasting a minimum of 450 hours.  The course can be completed via full-time or part-time route with the clinical placement arranged to provide experience in all areas of midwifery practice.

On successful completion of the course, guaranteed employment with NHS Grampian will be offered.
