Mental Health

This Sector of NHS Grampian is responsible for the provision of specialist Mental Health Services to the population of Grampian.  The service comprises of in-patient services in Aberdeen and Moray with a community nursing service operating across Grampian.  This encompasses all age ranges from children to older adults.

The area we are responsible for covers Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray.  We also provide a range of services to Shetland and Orkney and host an in-patient eating disorder service for the North of Scotland.  Our dynamic nursing services offers lots of opportunities for career development and advancement of nursing roles.  We are keen for all staff to develop their full potential, for example, supporting Health Care Support Workers to complete HNC in core and administrative practice (HNC CAP), modern apprenticeships and many post-graduate opportunities in psychological therapies and interventions.

Further information can be accessed about Royal Cornhill Hospital on NHS Grampian’s website.

I would like to become a Mental Health Nurse

In order to become a Registered Mental Health Nurse you require a degree from a recognised institution.  Training in Scotland is available from a variety of Universities, the most local one for Mental Health Nursing being the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

I am a qualified Mental Health Nurse considering a move to Grampian

We are pleased to hear you are interested in joining our team.  Vacancies are advertised on the NHS Grampian’s Vacancies site and updated weekly.

I am a qualified Mental Health Nurse but it’s been some time since I practised.  Am I able to return to work?

NHS Grampian and Robert Gordon University have developed a course for nurses whose registration has lapsed to help them return to practice.  The short, fully funded course prepares staff for re-joining the NMC register and enables nurses to return to their field of practice in a safe and confident manner.  Please see our Lapsed Registration page for more details.
